What You Need to Know About LED Walls for Your Event

Want your event to catch attention? Attention is currency at events, and LED walls grab it with bright screens, which gives you the perfect tool to deliver your event’s most important messages. This blog provides insights on content, power requirements, weight, and setup insights if you are serious about integrating LED walls into your next event.

Power

LED walls use a ton of electricity. Most venues need a dedicated power panel for the AV crew to plug into. For example, a 9’ x 16’ screen (about 3m x 5m) might need up to six wall outlets just for itself. Your production team can figure out the exact power needs and sort out a solution with the venue. In some cases if customers want to bring a video wall into a unique setting with limited power, a generator could be required.

Weight

These walls are heavy. One tile—about 500 mm square—can weigh 20 pounds. For that same 9’ x 16’ wall, you’re looking at 50 tiles, or 1,000 pounds total. If it’s standing on the floor, you’ll need sturdy truss, bracing, and ballast to keep it steady. If it’s hanging from the ceiling, the venue has to support that weight, so double checking is a must.

Setup Time

LED walls take longer to put up because they’re built from lots of pieces. A 9’ x 16’ projector screen might take two people an hour to set up. The same size LED wall? Plan on three people working two hours or more. Taking it down is slower too—projectors pack up fast, but LED walls need careful disassembly.

Content
Once you decide to integrate a wall into your event, you should be planning what content you are going to play on the wall throughout the experience. Here are just a few content ideas you may use a video wall for:

  • Branding and sponsorship graphics
  • Pre-produced videos specifically made to premiere at the event.
  • Ambient video (think nature scenes, branded animations, marketing clips, moving textures and more)
  • Live streaming video from the event (crowd cam style) up onto the big screen.

Final Thoughts

If you are considering integrating video walls into your next event, start with seeing if you can accommodate the logistics and price, if so, the next step is to imagine the experience you want to create on your video walls. A full service production team like HB Live should be able to help with both logistics and creative content guidance.
